Many prisoners in the camps succumbed to despair and dehumanization, losing their fight for life, liberty, and a sense of self; however, some in the camps actually seemed to retain or even further develop their sense of self and find or reaffirm their life’s purpose. According to Viktor Frankl, transcendence is rooted in our spirituality, and spirituality is the part of humanity that separates us from all other species. One cannot become a fully actualized and “whole” person with reaching self-transcendence, and that requires the individual to come to a satisfactory conclusion about their place in the higher order of things (Wong, 2016). Many achieve self-transcendence through their faith in God, while others may achieve it through recognition of some system of spirituality or idea of the soul. One study demonstrated that participants spent more time on study questions if they were told to think about the transcendent purpose for their education than if they were not. A second study found that students were better able to resist tempting alternatives to work when they thought about the transcendent purpose for their education than when they did not. In a second study, ninth-grade students were given an exercise to get them to think about having a broader purpose to their education. The Disabled Adult Child (DAC) — who may be an adopted child, or, in some cases, a stepchild, grandchild, or step grandchild — must be unmarried, age 18 or older, have a qualified disability that started before age 22, and meet the definition of disability for adults. Successfully achieving a state of self-transcendence is therefore about not only greater emotional and physical well-being as one ages but also with coming to terms with major existential challenges including mortality and the meaning of life. Self-transcendence may go hand-in-hand with symbolic immortality, the sense that the significance of one’s life will extend beyond one’s lifespan. In the same way, a nation, along with its whole system of common rules and interests, is a larger and more enduring entity than all the people who belong to it.
There are several special rules for people who are blind that recognize the severe impact of blindness on a person’s ability to work. For example, the monthly earnings limit for people who are blind is generally higher than the limit that applies to non-blind workers with disabilities. For each of the major body systems, we maintain a list of medical conditions we consider severe enough to prevent a person from doing SGA. Social Security program rules assume that working families have access to other resources to provide support during periods of short-term disabilities, including workers’ compensation, insurance, savings, and investments.
